William H. Merson
1936-2018
William Henry Merson, 81, of Berkeley Springs, died Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at The Berkeley Springs Center, LLC.
Born November 10, 1936 in Baltimore, Md., he was the son of the late Albert Harvey and Lillian Roberta Weitzel Merson.
He was a Christian.
He attended public schools in Maryland.
He served in the U.S. Army as an air defense launcher crewman and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. He was in the Bay of Pigs invasion and a captured prisoner of war.
He had worked as a millwright at Beverage Capital and American Can Company, both in Baltimore. He also worked as a chauffeur with Alexander’s Wedding Photography in Baltimore and in the maintenance department of Cacapon State Park.
He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1483 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #4244. He had served as President of the Greenwood PTA and with the Morgan County Deputy Reserves.
He liked John Wayne movies and the Troubadour.
Surviving are his children, Catherine Merson, Parkville, Md., Amelia Merson, Berkeley Springs, Kristine Merson, McConnellsburg, Pa., Jessica Nichols, Leesburg, Va. and Sunday Myers, Hancock; 15 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Leith Shock Merson on March 31, 2001; one daughter, Anne Merson; one sister, Patricia Brady and one brother, Albert Merson.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, September 1, at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs. Pastor Jack Hiles, Jr. officiated.
Interment with graveside military honors was in Greenwood Cemetery.
