Volunteers take on projects on United Way Day of Caring

Morgan County students, businesses and organiza-tions spruced up the community and helped other agencies during the
annual United Way of the Eastern Panhandle’s Day of Caring on Tuesday, September 11.
Morgan County Extension Agent Cindy Smalley, the Morgan County Day of Caring coordinator, reported that nearly 200 volunteers participated in the Day of Caring event, which included 20 projects.

day of their time to help their community,” Smalley said.

Food drive, Greenwood

Smalley said the Berkeley Springs High School National Honor Society conducted the Mega Food Drive again for the Morgan County Backpacks Program at the Morgan Plaza during the day. Local Girl Scouts Troop 40463 handled the food drive that evening.
Berkeley Springs High School football team players and Greenwood United Methodist Church members pulled weeds
outside of the former Greenwood Elementary on September 11.

The football team also helped church members move boxes of old textbooks at the school as the church starts to prepare the building for becoming the Greenwood Community Center, Smalley said.
Local CNB employees did mulching and weeding at the Morgan County Observatory and stained the outside of the building.  Another team from CNB served dinner that day at the Starting Points Mealtime Community Kitchen.

Clean-up, painting

Berkeley Springs High School student council members helped with painting at the Ice House on September 11.
The high school’s bullying prevention club and Morgan County Youth Coalition members weeded and sorted supplies at the Morgan County Partnership’s building.
Boy Scouts Troop 12 members did clean-up, weeding and other needed jobs at North Berkeley Community Park and the Morgan County School Board office.   Smalley said the troop picked up 12 bags of trash along the park fence. The Boy Scouts also put sand bags in place at the park.
Morgan County Boys and Girls Club members cleaned up the basement in the Community Service Building after it had some water in it, Smalley said. They also painted, weeded and did flood clean-up on the grounds.
Timber Ridge School students did weed-whacking at the Alex Rickli Memorial Soccer Complex and painted lines in its parking lot.
The Paw Paw High School HEROS and Future Farmers of America club members painted the school cafeteria and lines on the school parking lot.
Senior Life Services of Morgan County painted lines at the Berkeley Springs Senior Center parking lot.

Reading, other

Smalley said the Morgan County Read Aloud chapter and the Berkeley Springs High School book club labeled books for the Read Aloud program and straightened and organized the Backpacks Program room at the school board office.  Students also went to the War Memorial Hospital extended care wing to read to residents.

The Warm Springs Watershed Association,  Morgan County Master Gardeners and the Berkeley Springs High School Future Farmers of America built  a hugelkultur stormwater management system on a Greenway Cemetery hillside to prevent further erosion on the cemetery road.
The Warm Springs Middle School WolfPack Student Network news team covered Day of Caring projects at different sites, taking photos and videos of volunteers in action and interviewing people.
War Memorial Hospital provided breakfast and lunch for all volunteers on Tuesday.  Senior Life Services Center allowed them to use their space for breakfast, Smalley said. Day of Caring committee members delivered lunches.
Smalley said she was very happy to partner with Morgan County Schools on the Day of Caring. Berkeley Springs High School had a bus load of students that participated in community service projects that day.
