Tribe finishes in fifth place at 34th Max Horz Wrestling Invitational

by Jamie Harris

With the new gym construction causing the administration at Berkeley Springs High School and the Morgan County Board of Education office some considerable stress with the 34th Max Horz Border Wars Wrestling Invitational. The school and county got some good news earlier in the week when the Fire Marshal gave the green light to proceed with the tournament on Friday and Saturday.

With 17 teams from Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia venturing to the Berkeley Springs High School gym for the two day wrestling event on December 7 and 8 the new gym was finally buzzing with excitement. What a better way to open the gym to competition then walking into the facility and seeing wrestling mats covering the brand new floor.  The wrestling action was just as exciting and intense.

Host Berkeley Springs sent four wrestlers into Saturday’s championship finals as Cole Morris (132), Landen Riggleman (138), Ethan Zimmerman (145) and Vaughn Shaw (152) all worked their way through their respective brackets.
However only two were able to capture individual titles. In the 132 pound final Morris lost 4-2 to James Wood’s Christopher Nuss. In the 138 pound final Riggleman lost 8-4 to Bridgeport’s Addison Courtney.

Zimmerman was up next in the 145 pound final and faced off with Hedgesville’s Noah Wahler. Zimmerman scored quickly to take a 2-0 lead and from there proceeded to grind out points against Wahler before pinning him at the 3:43 mark in the second period.

Shaw followed in the 152 pound final as he faced Blake Sandy from James Wood. Shaw was very dominant throughout the match and took a 12-4 major decision over Sandy to earn his first career Max Horz championship.

The Indians finished in fifth place overall in the team standings behind overall champion James Wood, second place Woodgrove, third place Hedgesville and fourth place Bridgeport.

The Indians also had the following wrestlers place in the top six of their respective weight classes.

Christian Garver (sixth place, 120 lb.), Payton Thompson (fourth place, 160 lb.) and Joe Warrenfeltz (fourth place, 182 lb.).

Landen Riggleman, l38 lb., setting up a cross face against a Bridgeport wrestler in the finals at the Max Horz Border War Invitational.

Next up for the Tribe wrestling team is the two day Mussleman Duals this Friday, December 14 and Saturday, December 15. Over those two days the Indians will have 10 dual matches.
