The Berkeley Springs High School Indians Varsity Boys’ Basketball Team went 1-2 in games played last week. With two road contests and one home event the Tribe was looking to continue to build on the 2018-19 season.
The Tribe ventured to Short Gap on Friday, January 4, for a contest with the red hot and undefeated Frankfort Falcons.
Frankfort wasted no time in showing why they are a serious state contender as they jumped out to an 18-6 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter the Tribe started to find their scoring groove, but the Falcons managed to outscore them 21-18 to go into the locker room with a 39-24 advantage.
In the third quarter the
Falcons and Indians played some serious defense as both teams struggled to find open shots. However, Frankfort outscored the Indians 7-3 to increase their lead to 46-27.
In the fourth stanza the Falcons outscored the Indians 15-4 to secure the 30 point win 61-31.
Berkeley Springs was led by senior EJ Barkley who scored 19 points. Ty’Jae Armstrong (six points), Gavin Barkley (five points) and Payton Mann (one point) also scored for the Indians.
The Indians traveled to Hyndman, Pa. on Monday, January 7 for a contest with the Hyndman Charter School Hornets.
Berkeley Springs jumped out to a commanding 28-10 first quarter lead. The Tribe increased the lead to take a 49-18 half time lead with a 21 point outburst.
In the third quarter the Indians outscored the Hornets 24-4 to take a comfortable 73-22 lead.
In the final quarter the Tribe outscored Hyndman 10-2 to take the blowout win 83-24.
Berkeley Springs was led by Trenton Kyne (19 points), Nathan Bland (16 points), EJ Barkley (15 points), Gavin Barkley (10 points), Mann (six points), Larry Miller (six points), Hunter Duvall (four points), Dominic Rider (four points), Cameron King (two points) and Carson Stotler (one point).
The Indians hosted rival Keyser in a key sectional game on Wednesday, January 9.
In the first period the visitors from Mineral County outscored the Indians 13-11.
In the second quarter the Indians outscored the Golden Tornado 13-11 to go into the half tied at 24-24.
In the third quarter Keyser took control of the game with a 15-13 run to take a 39-37 lead.
In the final period the Indians and Golden Tornado were tied at 47-47 with only a few seconds left on the game clock when a Keyser player was left uncontested for a buzzer beater three point shot to give the Golden Tornado a 50-47 win.
Leading the way for the Indians were Mann (11 points), EJ Barkley (11 points), Armstrong (10 points), Bland (five points), Gavin Barkley (four points), Miller (three points) and Stotler (two points).
The Indians had a home contest with the Hancock Panthers on Tuesday, January 15. Then on Friday, January 18 the Indians will host the Petersburg Vikings in both a junior varsity and varsity contest starting at 6 p.m.
