Stirring before dawn

Apple butter cooking started before dawn at the Greenwood Community Center on Saturday, September 21. Ryan Fincham and Frank Mellott were on the early shift of volunteers stirring the kettles. Dozens of volunteers spent the previous day peeling, slicing and snitting 76 bushels of apples donated by Glascock’s Orchards. Greenwood will be making apple butter in the town square at the 46th Annual Apple Butter Festival on Columbus Day weekend and selling the sweet stuff. Greenwood’s efforts produced 1,400 pints of apple butter last weekend.
