Berkeley Springs High School cross country and track standout John Mundey was selected as a member of the Class of 2019 Berkeley Springs High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Mundey who graduated from Berkeley Springs in the spring of 2010 left his mark as a distance running specialist.
In the fall of 2009, Mundey captured the Class AA Region II Championship in cross country. The following week at the Class A/AA State Cross Country Championships Mundey was edged by Grafton’s Drew Woodford for the state championships denying the talented senior a state title.
In the spring of 2010, Mundey reset his sights on a state championship in a big way. Mundey captured state titles in the 1600 meters (4:32.22), 3200 meters (9:54.19), and then teamed up with Max Langenstein, Cory Yarrington and Corey Shetler to capture state gold in the 4×800 meter relay with a time of 8:17.15. Mundey added another state medal with a fifth place finish in the 800 meters (2:01.47). When the dust had settled after the state meet Mundey was the third highest scorer that day with 24.5 points.
Upon graduating, a well decorated athlete, at Berkeley Springs High School Mundey took his talents to Alderson Broaddus University. There Mundey was an All-Conference athlete in cross country in 2014 and earned All-Conference honors in track and field in 2015. Mundey graduated Alderson Broaddus University in 2015 with a Bachelor’s Degree in History.
In 2016, Mundey earned the Distinguished Honor Graduate of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers One Station Unit Training. In 2018, Mundey was named the U.S. Army Reserve Soldier of the Year and Best Warrior. Also in 2018, Mundey participated in the Department of the Army Soldier of the Year competition and finished in fourth place.
In 2019 Mundey participated in the NATO International Military Competition Competitor representing Team Military USA.
Mundey is a bridge crew member from Berkeley Springs, 459th Engineer Company (Multi-Role Bridge), 299th Combat Engineer Battalion, 412th Theater Engineer Command.
With all of his impressive athletic accomplishments as a high school and collegiate athlete and now as a member of the military John Mundey will take his rightful place in the Berkeley Springs High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class 2019.
Mundey will be inducted into the BSHS Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, September 14, at 5 p.m. On Friday, September 13, hall of famers will be presented to the home football crowd when the Tribe hosts rival Hancock at half time of the game.
