by Geoff Fox

On April 19, voters in Hancock took to the polls to vote in the municipal election, voting Tim Smith as mayor and Misty Cubbage and Leo Murray to town council. Monday evening, they were sworn in and officially took office to represent Hancock.

Smith takes over as mayor for outgoing Ralph Salvagno and Cubbage takes the council seat of Tim Boyer.

Salvagno called the meeting together as a normal meeting with Town Manager Joe Gilbert giving a brief update on a few grant applications.

Before the swearing in, Boyer was able to give a few remarks as he left office.

“It was my pleasure serving the town of Hancock for the last four years,” Boyer said.

He also congratulated Cubbage and Murray and said that he looked forward to working with them.

Salvagno said he wanted to recognize the people who make things happen in town.

“We don’t often take time to recognize them,” he said.

He added while he couldn’t recognize all of them by name, he said he could by the jobs they’ve had.

Salvagno thanked past and present councilmembers, Gilbert and former Town Manager David Smith, office staff, Amy Gillespie, the police department, and a number of others who volunteer around town such as those at Interfaith Service Coalition and the youth league coaches.

“That’s what makes this community great and that’s what’s going to continue to make this community great moving forward,” Salvagno said.

After his parting remarks, Kevin Tucker of the Washington County Circuit Court came forward and swore Smith in as Mayor of Hancock.

Smith then swore in Cubbage who took the place of Boyer. Murray was the last to be sworn in.

Cubbage thanked those who voted.

“I hope to do this position well and I’m excited to serve the town of Hancock for the next four years,” she said.

Murray thanked those who voted for him and also Salvagno for the hours he put in working with Harvest.

Smith thanked those who came out to vote on Election Day and for the support.

“I’m very humbled to serve for the next two years,” he said. “The only thing I can promise you is I’ll work hard and give you 100% and try to be the best mayor that I can be for you.”

Smith added he’d give his phone number out and be there if people had any questions or needed help.

The evening ended with Smith noting Wednesday, May 12, is the next town meeting.
