School board sells Great Cacapon ball field to fire company

by Kate Evans

The Morgan County School Board approved the sale of 9.9 acres of surplus land in Great Cacapon to the Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company for $31,500.

The amount was determined by a public auction that was held at the property on June 1. The board’s approval of the sale came at their June 4 meeting.

School Superintendent Dr. Erich May said previously that the property was purchased in 1933 by the school board and is known as the ball field. The land is not attached to Great Cacapon Elementary or to the fire department. It was used by school students when Great Cacapon Elementary was open and by the community.

Dr, May said there were five bidders for the land at the public auction, one of which was the Cacapon Institute. Bids for the property started at a minimum of $10,000. About two dozen people attended the auction.

The sale of the ball field land to the Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company put the property into the hands of the community and gave it to the closest thing there is to a government agency in Great Cacapon, which May said was a good thing.

Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company Assistant Chief Junior Hook said that the fire department got the ball field property to secure it for future use and that they had no immediate plans for the land.
