1933-2018

Robert William Koontz, Jr., 85, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, December 6, 2018 at the Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility in Kearneysville.

Born September 6, 1933 in Johnstown, Pa., he was the son of the late Robert William, Sr. and Muriel Olive Allen Koontz.

He was a member of Berkeley Springs Church of Christ.

He was a 1951 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School.

He retired at the rank of Senior Master Sergeant with 23 years of service as a supply sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He served as a Non-commissioned Officer in Charge of the Management branch of the U.S. Air Force.

He was the manager of the Berkeley Springs NAPA store for many years, a member of Gideon’s International and a member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post #60.

He was active with and instrumental in the planning, fundraising and construction of the Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility.

He is survived by his wife, LeEsta Rankin Anderson Koontz, at home; his children, Debra Haeussler, Marco Island, Fla., Gregory Koontz, Emmaus, Pa., Karen Harshman and Shari Brown, both of Berkeley Springs and Janice Payne, Fredericksburg, Va.; one brother, Roy Koontz, Berkeley Springs; 14 grandchildren; many great and great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Elsie Wilma Harris Koontz on February 8, 2010 and one sister, Bonnie Carnahan.

Funeral services were conducted on Monday, December 10 at the Berkeley Springs Church of Christ, Berkeley Springs. Dick Bartrug and Van Sprague officiated. Interment was in Great Cacapon Cemetery.
