1935-2019

Robert Eugene “Bob” Smith, 83, of Berkeley Springs, died Sunday, June 2, 2019 at War Memorial Hospital.

Born October 21, 1935 in Great Cacapon, he was the son of the late Theodore Roosevelt McKinley and Mary Catherine Gaither Smith.

He was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church.

He was a graduate of Berkeley Springs High School.

He retired in 1996 after 30 years as a meter reader with Potomac Edison. In earlier years, he worked at the Interwoven Hosiery Mill and Hovermale’s Produce.

He sang with the Gospel Lamp Lighter for many years.

He liked woodworking, hunting, gardening and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Phyllis Jean “Doodles” Henry Smith; his children, Penny Spruill, Williamsburg, Va., Pamela Stotler, Decatur, Ind. and Robert Smith, Berkeley Springs; one brother, William Smith, Hancock; three grandchildren, Matthew Spruill, Zachary Spruill, both of Mechanicsville, Va. and Colton Smith, Shepherdstown; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Ridgeway and Jessie Smith; one infant sister Wilma Smith and one brother, Harold Smith.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 6 at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, 6752 Winchester Grade Road, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Lloyd McCanna officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today, Wednesday, June 5 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.
