Police last Thursday arrested a Rio, W.Va. man and charged him with burglary and grand larceny in an August 4 break-in in Great Cacapon.
Kevin R. Cain, 44, was extradited from Howard County, Md. and arrested by Capt. Tim Stapleton of the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department on August 30.
Cain was wanted on arrest warrants tied to the burglary of a home on Woodmont Road in which a safe and other items, including valuable jewelry, were stolen.
Cain had allegedly been in the victim’s home while he helped her daughter move out.
Capt. Stapleton’s investigation into the break-in had already led to the recovery of a number of the victims’ items from a pawn shop in Hagerstown.
Officers recovered several more items, including some jewelry, when they executed a search warrant for an Amelia Street home in Paw Paw on August 14. The home was linked to an associate of Cain.
During his investigation, Capt. Stapleton reviewed several jail phone calls in which Cain, who was incarcerated for several days on unrelated charges, allegedly directed a woman what to do with the stolen items and where to sell the jewelry.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Morgan County Magistrate Court, Capt. Stapleton was able to track down several items of jewelry in Hagerstown and photograph them. The victim was able to identify the items as hers.
Stapleton also indicated that Cain had attempted to sell more than a dozen items of jewelry, some with semi-precious stones, to a pawn shop in Capon Bridge. Shop owners advised police they were suspicious and didn’t buy any of the items.
Cain is being held at the Eastern Regional Jail in lieu of a $25,000 bail.
