Richard L. Bartles

1933-2018

Richard Leroy “Dick” Bartles, age 85, of Hancock, Md., passed away on Saturday, December 15, 2018, at the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, in Fairfax, Va.

Born July 16, 1933, in Clear Spring, Md., he was the son of the late Clyde and Gladys (Dickerhoff) Bartles.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Lillian (Brannon) Bartles, whom he married in 1953 and who died March 15, 2014.

He graduated from the Clear Spring High School with the class of 1951, and entered active duty with the U.S. Army in May, 1953.

He was honorably discharged in May, 1961.

He retired in 1987 from London Fog, in Hancock, after twenty-five years of employment.

Dick is survived by three grandchildren, Jayme Bartles, of Hancock, Jennifer McSparron, of Seattle, Wa., and Jodie McSparron, of Emmitsburg, Md.; the mother of his grandchildren, Teresa Joy McSparron and her husband, Joseph; a great-grandson, Clayton Jay Bartles; two brothers, Donald Bartles, of Illinois, and William “Billy” Bartles, of Frederick, Md.; a brother-in-law, Robert “Bob” W. Brannon, of Hagerstown, Md.; two nieces, Kelli McNamee and her husband, John, and Patti Frey and her husband, David, both of Hagerstown; a nephew, Bradley Brannon, of Hagerstown; and a great-niece, Jordan McNamee.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Jay Richard Bartles; an infant son, Richard Coe Bartles; a sister, Virginia Elizabeth Bittinger; a brother-in-law, Harry Bittinger, Jr.; a nephew, Eric “Buck” Bittinger; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Brannon; and a niece, Kristie Brannon.

A memorial service to honor his life was held at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, Md., on Wednesday, December 26, 2018, at 3 p.m. Rev. Jeffrey Hawbaker officiated.

A gathering of family and friends preceded the service that day, starting at 2 p.m.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made, in Dick’s memory, to the Tri-State Honor Guard, c/o Douglas Weller, 11526 Big Pool Road, Big Pool, Md. 21711-1308.
