Police have suspect in Tuesday bank robbery in custody

Police have taken into custody the man they believe robbed City National Bank in Berkeley Springs on Tuesday, June 4. Berkeley Springs Police Chief T.J. Johnson said he spotted the man, identified as Steven Silverman of Maryland, on the sidewalk in front of City National Bank on Friday afternoon — three days after the robbery. Chief Johnson was in the parking lot of the bank when he saw the suspect. Johnson said Morgan County 911 was also alerted that someone fitting the description of the robbery suspect had been seen in Berkeley Springs on Friday. Chief Johnson said search warrants were being sought in connection with the investigation. As of 4:15 p.m., no official charging documents had been filed in Morgan County Magistrate Court. Further details about the investigation have not been released by police.

City National Bank employees activated a security alarm shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, and confirmed to law enforcement that the bank had been robbed. Police said earlier this week that the suspect handed a note to a teller demanding money. He had no weapon and no one was harmed in the robbery. The suspect was seen fleeing the bank on foot. Police said they believed he had walked to the area behind Hunter’s Hardware and left the area in a vehicle on Tuesday afternoon.
