Passenger injured in Great Cacapon accident

by Kate Evans

A two-car accident outside of Great Cacapon on the morning of Wednesday, October 17 injured a passenger in one of the vehicles when a head-on collision occurred.

Morgan County Sheriff’s Deputy Lieutenant Seth Place said that the accident call came in to the Morgan County 911 Dispatch Center at 8:33 a.m. for the 6500 block of Cacapon Road, which is on the other side of Woodmont Road near Great Cacapon.

Place said that a 1991 Ford Crown Victoria driven by Daniel Farris, 66, of Great Cacapon pulled out of Moss Hill Lane onto Route 9 into the travel path of a 1996 Ford dump truck driven by Jeffrey Keefer, 30, of Berkeley Springs.

Keefer was driving west on Cacapon Road in his dump truck when the accident occurred and was able to break and steer, but the vehicles still collided in a head-on collision, Place said. A passenger in the Crown Victoria was transported to War Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

The Crown Victoria driver initially refused treatment by Morgan County Emergency Medical Services but later decided to be treated at War Memorial Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Place said. The dump truck driver was uninjured in the accident.

Place, who was the officer in charge at the scene, said that Crown Victoria sustained heavy damage to the front of the vehicle and Roy’s Service Center was called for towing service.   The dump truck driver was able to make temporary repairs to move the truck off the roadway to a safe location where their mechanic could look at it.

Place noted that the speed limit is 55 miles an hour where the accident took place and he had no reason to believe that speed was a factor in the wreck.

Also responding to the accident besides Deputy Place and Morgan County Emergency Medical Services were the Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company and the West Virginia Public Service Commission/Department of Transportation enforcement. Place said they were on the scene for around an hour to an hour and 15 minutes.
