Nelson C. Caldwell
1941-2019
Nelson Charles “Stretch” Caldwell, age 77, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Winchester Medical Center.
Born January 31, 1941 in Brosius, W.Va., he was the son of the late Charles William and Laura Lillian Lake Caldwell.
He was baptized at Alpine United Methodist Church and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
He was a 1958 graduate of Southern Fulton High School in Warfordsburg, Pa.
Stretch served during the Vietnam War as an Aircraft Radio Repairman with the United States Air Force from February 15, 1963 until his honorable discharge on January 31, 1969 at the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He had worked as an electronics technician with Carroll Electric in Martinsburg and retired in the late 1980’s as a machinist with Mack Truck in Hagerstown.
He was a member of the Morning Coffee Group at McDonalds, the Hancock Lions Club, Alderton Dawson American Legion Post #60, the Thursday Vets Crew and The Junior Order of United American Mechanics where he had held several offices.
Stretch was an avid reader and a matchbox enthusiast with a collection of more than 5000 pieces.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Linda Cheryl Sanders Caldwell, at home; two sons, Nelson Charles “Chick” Caldwell II and his wife Patricia and Joseph Michael Caldwell, all of Berkeley Springs; one sister, Cordelia Belle Smith of Warfordsburg, Pa.; five grandchildren, Zachary William Shea Caldwell, Noah Charles Caldwell, Grace Symarian Caldwell and Dakota Levi Caldwell, all of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Jasmine Love Caldwell of Great Cacapon, W.Va.; one great granddaughter, Nevaeh Rayne Caldwell of Great Cacapon, W.Va., and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with Pastor Doug Hoffman officiating.
Interment with military honors will be in Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery.
The family received friends from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
