Nancy J. Bishop
1942-2020
Nancy Jean Bishop, 77, of Hancock, Md., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 16, 2020, under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle in Kearneysville, W.Va.
Born November 23, 1942 in Warfordsburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Jesse E. and Ruth B. Bishop.
She was a graduate of Hancock High School, class of 1960.
She worked at Blue Cross/Blue Shield Insurance Agency, The Hancock News and other businesses over the years. She retired from Harmison and Savasten Law Offices, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
Nancy had volunteered at many local organizations including Hancock’s Interfaith Service Coalition, where she initiated and set up an adult and youth literacy program, “Evening with Reading.”
She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Hancock and sang in the choir.
She is survived by brother, Jesse R. Bishop of Falling Waters, W.Va., with whom she resided before going to hospice; brother, Arthur S. Bishop and wife, Carol, of Berkeley Springs; sister, Dorothy L. (Bishop) Hovermale and husband, Wayne, of Hancock; sister-in-law, Sondra K. (Crabtree) Bishop of Hancock; two step-children; many nieces and nephews; special friend, Ken Boheim of Hancock; close friend and volunteer caregiver, Judy Barrick of Breezewood, Pa. and a full circle of close friends, all of whom she held close to her heart.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, James E. Bishop, Sr. and wife, Virgie, of Warfordsburg; brother, Frank B. Bishop, Sr. of Hancock; a stillborn brother, Howard G. Bishop; sister, Anna Mary (Bishop) Powell and husband, Floyd, of Warfordsburg; sister, Verna Lee Bishop and husband, Grant, of Hancock; nephew, Joey Lynn Bishop; grandnephew, James Warren (J.W.) Bishop; great-grandniece, Riley Grace Crossman; two step-children and former husband, Herbert L. Hensley of Warfordsburg.
Arrangements were handled by Brown Funeral Homes and Cremations, Martinsburg, W.Va.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430 or to Interfaith Service Coalition, 116 W. High St., Hancock, MD 21750.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, March 1, at 2 p.m. at Hancock American Legion, 240 E. Main St., Hancock, MD 21750. The Rev. Allan Weatherholt will officate.
