1934-2018
Mary Lee Ward, age 84, of Hancock, Md., died on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at her son’s home while under the care of Hospice of Washington County.
Born February 12, 1934 in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William Clyde and Mary Elizabeth Wills Jackson.
She was a member of Hancock United Methodist Church.
She was a graduate of Berkeley Springs High School.
She and her late husband operated the Berkeley Springs Tastee Freeze (located at the site of the former Sheetz store) from 1972-1975 and operated Ward’s Restaurant (located at what is now Helsley-Johnson’s parking lot) from 1975-1978.
Mary Lee worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Valley View Nursing Home for 27 years.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Webster B. Harrison American Legion Post #26 in Hancock.
She was an avid bowler for many years, enjoyed country music, camping, gardening and all things having to do with the outdoors.
Mary Lee loved to spend time with her family.
Surviving are her children, James Edward Ward, Jr. and his wife Starla of Hagerstown, Beverly Ann Snaman and her husband Roger of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Mary Jacqueline “Jackie” Flowers and her husband Danny of Warfordsburg, Pa.; two sisters, Frances “Sis” Moss of Berkeley Springs and Loretta Hendershot of Cumberland, Md.; one brother, Bobbie Young of Berkeley Springs; seven grandchildren, Benjamin Ray and his fiancée Kristy and Brock Flowers and his fiancée Holly, all of Hancock, Adam Flowers and his wife Amy of Warfordsburg, Jason Ward and his wife Kim of Knoxville, Tenn., Keith Ward and his wife Sara of Ashburn, Va., Ethan Greene and his fiancée Anna of Germantown, Md., and Emily Greene of Frederick, Md.; six great grandchildren, Dakota Ray, Lilly Kline, Haley Flowers, James Flowers, E.J. Greene and Aden Ward. Mary Lee also leaves behind her beloved Yorkie “Gracie.”
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, James Edward Ward, Sr. on November 7, 2013, her daughter, Yvonne Lee Ward Greene, a sister, Julia Maxine Young and two brothers, Clyde Junior Jackson and an infant brother, Theodore Jackson.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Hancock United Methodist Church, 170 W. Main Street, Hancock, MD where the family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m.–noon. The Rev. Michael Bynum will officiate.
Interment will be in Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Fulton County, PA.
