Man left at hospital was from Montgomery County, Md.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Department has identified the deceased black man who was dropped off at War Memorial Hospital on July 13. Police say the 28 year old man was Elgin Malik Smith. Smith was from the Montgomery County, Md. area, said Sheriff K.C. Bohrer. Deputy Luke Shambaugh is still investigating the circumstances surrounding Smith’s death.

Police were called to the hospital shortly after 9:30 a.m. on the morning Smith was dropped off by a white female in a pickup truck. The woman, who police did not identify, allegedly told officers that she had given the man a ride along Harrison Avenue in northern Berkeley Springs and she knew him only as “Elgin.” The woman said she took the man to the hospital when he became unconscious in her vehicle.

The cause of Smith’s death is still unconfirmed, but Sheriff Bohrer said the preliminary investigation suggests he died of a suspected drug overdose.
