1932-2019

Lewis Eldridge Payne, Jr., 86, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, January 10, 2019 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg.

Born May 8, 1932 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Lewis Eldridge Payne, Sr. and Orris Emily Webb Payne.

He was a graduate of Calvin Coolidge High School in Washington, D.C.

He served with the U.S. Coast Guard from 1952 until his honorable discharge at the rank of EM2 in 1955. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

He had worked as a service technician with various U.S. Government agencies until 1976.

He was a self-employed woodworker, moving to Berkeley Springs in the early 1980s.

He enjoyed designing and building remote-control planes and boats.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Adair Londeree Payne, at home; his children, Andrew Payne and Scott Payne, both of Lincoln, Mass., Kevin Payne, Stephens City, Va., Linda Kinikin, Deale, Md., Laura Pacheco, Twentynine Palms, Calif., Jimmy Payne, Waldorf, Md., Cindy Payne and Lewis Payne, III, La Plata, Md.; two brothers, David Payne, Tyaskin, Md., and Tommy Payne, Pavo, Ga.; 19 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Beverly Snyder and Orris Frazee.

The family will receive friends Saturday, January 26, 3-5 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs.

Interment will be private.
