1939-2019

Laurence Foster Miller, age 80, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs.

Born January 22, 1939 in Kifer, Md., he was the son of the late John William and Elma Virginia Brown Miller.

He attended Faith in God Chapel.

Laurence went to public schools in Oldtown, Md.

He served with the U. S. Army from August 29, 1958 until his honorable discharge at the rank of PFC on August 28, 1961.

He started out working with his father in the pulpwood business and then worked as an excavator, building roads and the golf course at the Woods Resort in Hedgesville. He retired as the owner and operator of Miller’s Excavating.

Laurence was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1483 and the Fur, Fin and Feather Hunting Club, where he played cards every Wednesday night, accompanied by his devoted dog and best friend Chewy.

He was an avid bow hunter, enjoyed fishing, old cars and was a die-hard Elvis fan.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Loretta Mae Simmons Miller, at home; his children, Gregory Lawrence Miller and his fiancée Tanya Martz, Thressa Diane Miller and her husband Robert and Valerie Dawn Vanorsdale and her husband Walter, all of Berkeley Springs; six sisters, Louise Benninghove of Richmond, Va., Barbara Jean Holliday of Gainesboro, Va., Sue Foltz, Patsy MacCumbee and Kay Bishop, all of Berkeley Springs and Donna “Lynn” Miller of Martinsburg; his half-sister, Rose Marie Wills of Lovettsville, Va.; four brothers, Fred Miller, Larry “Ed” Miller, Dennis Miller and Steve Miller, all of Berkeley Springs; six grandchildren, Holly Miller, Heather Miller, Amber Bartlett, Lawrence “Bubby” Miller, Mark Cowles and Matthew Cowles, all of Berkeley Springs; four great grandchildren, Christian Bermanski, Bailey Miller, Eli Cowles and River Crone, all of Berkeley Springs and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Angela Marie Miller and four brothers, Jim, Jerry, Donald and Rick Miller.

Funeral service was conducted at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with Pastor Ken Dyar officiating. Military honors were provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard. Interment was private.

The family received friends from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home, which was open from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Tuesday for the convenience of family and friends.

There was time of fellowship and refreshments at the Moose Lodge social room following the service.
