The Berkeley Springs High School Lady Indians hosted the Hancock Lady Panthers at the friendly confines of the Berkeley Springs High School gym last Friday, December 6. It was not only the season opener for the Tribe, but also another rivalry game between the two neighboring schools that is coined the “Battle of the Potomac” in all contests the two schools compete in.
The Lady Indians jumped out to a 9-4 first quarter lead as they got scoring from Taylor Stotler (two points), Ty’aira Mifflin (three points), Sara Veara (two points) and Molly Hogbin (two points).
The Tribe kept the lead as they outscored Hancock 13-5 in the second quarter to take a 22-9 halftime lead.
At the end of the third quarter Berkeley Springs held a 31-15 lead. In the fourth quarter Hancock made a furious rally outscoring Berkeley Springs 17-9, but came up short as the Lady Indians (1-0) held on for the 40-32 win.
Junior Mifflin led the Lady Indians with 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and four steals. Sophomore Veara (10 points), senior Kaleah Mellott (one point and nine rebounds), junior Karalyne Banks (four points and five rebounds), sophomore Harly Didawick (three points and four rebounds), senior Stotler (four points) and freshman Hogbin (four points) also contributed to the win.
Next up for Berkeley Springs is an away contest at Washington High School on Thursday, December 12. The junior varsity game will start at 6 p.m. and the varsity will follow at 7:30 p.m.
