Lady Indians Softball season comes to an end with losses in sectional championships

The Berkeley Springs Lady Indians varsity softball team saw its 2019 season end with two losses in the Class AA Sectional Championships.

On Monday, April 29 the Lady Indians had to endure a long road trip to Barbour County to play the Philip Barbour Colts in the opening round of the sectional double elimination tournament.

Berkeley Springs went up 2-0 in the top of the second inning when Mackenzie Stotler and Aleah Hageny singled. Natalie McCarty then laced a two run RBI double to score the base runners.

In the top of the third inning the Lady Indians increased their lead to 3-0 when Katie Hoffman walked and eventually scored on Hannah Burton’s RBI single.

Philip Barbour battled back in the bottom of the fourth inning when they scored six runs courtesy of a solo home run, two doubles, three singles and a Berkeley Springs error. The Colts pushed the lead to 11-3 with a five run fifth inning. That score would be the final.

Facing an elimination game on Thursday, May 2 the Lady Indians hit the road to face Frankfort.

The Falcons went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning and pushed the score to 2-0 on a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. Berkeley Springs cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the third inning when McCarty doubled and scored on Ally Emery’s RBI single.

Frankfort pushed their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third inning on a two run home run.

In the top of the fourth inning the Lady Indians put together a rally. Stotler and Burton singled. McCarty followed with a walk. Hageny and Kwaylynn McCarty then had RBI ground outs. Taylor Stotler then followed with a two run RBI double to give Berkeley Springs a 5-4 lead.

Frankfort would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double to knot the score at 5-5. In the bottom of the seventh inning Frankfort would take the win on a game winning RBI single to end the Lady Indians season.
