Lady Indians lose a nail biter to Hancock

The Berkeley Springs High School Lady Indians Varsity Basketball Team entered the last week of the regular season on a 12 game losing streak. With Hancock and Faith Christian coming to play at the Tribe’s home court giving them a chance at earning some much needed wins for the struggling program.
The Lady Indians hosted the Hancock Panthers on Wednesday, February 13. This was the third meeting of the season between the two teams and Hancock owned wins in the previous two games.
In the first quarter Berkeley Springs jumped out to a 17-16 first quarter lead. The Lady Indians continued to play well and took a 23-18 halftime lead.
Hancock rallied with an 11-6 run to tie the game at 29-29 at the end of the period.
In the fourth quarter the Panthers outscored the Tribe 7-6 to take the exciting 36-35 win and send Berkeley Springs to its 19th straight loss.
Berkeley Springs was led by sophomore guards Ty’aira Mifflin (nine points, three assists and one steal) and Caybrie Clatterbuck (seven points and three assists). Junior guard Taylor Stotler added seven points while sophomore Karalyne Banks had five points and seven rebounds. Senior post player Darby Harris had five points, 11 rebounds and one blocked shot. Junior post player Kaleah Mellott had two points, five rebounds and four steals in the loss.
Berkeley Springs hosted Faith Christian Academy on senior night on Thursday, February 14. Three Lady Indian’s senior players Brooke Davison, Harris and Katie Hoffman were recognized for their four years of contributions to the Tribe basketball program. Senior Mackenzie Stotler was recognized as well for her two years as a basketball statistician. However before they were recognized Berkeley Springs took care of a 13 game losing streak by throttling Faith Christian 55-19. In the first quarter the Lady Indians took a 13-7 lead.
In the second quarter the Tribe outscored Faith Christian 23-5 to take a comfortable 36-12 halftime lead.
The start of the third quarter saw senior Harris connect with a deep three point shot for her first career three point basket. From there Berkeley Springs outscored the Falcons 10-1 to go up 46-13.
In the final period the Lady Indians outscored Faith Christian 9-6 to take the 55-19 win. Berkeley Springs was led by Harris (11 points and five rebounds), Clatterbuck (10 points, two assists and one steal), Mifflin (seven points, four assists and four steals), Stotler (six points, three assists and three steals), Emily Stabler (four points and seven rebounds), Hoffman (four points and five rebounds), Brittany Huntley (three points), Banks (two points and three rebounds), Sara Veara (two points and six rebounds), Kaleah Mellot (two points and two rebounds), Hannah Shekey (two points) and Harley Didawick (two points).

The Lady Indians traveled to Petersburg for a contest with the Vikings on Saturday, February 16.
The trip to Grant County proved to be a bad one for the Tribe as the Vikings jumped out to a 13-1 first quarter lead.
By the half Petersburg held a 25-5 lead. The second half saw Petersburg outscore the Lady Indians 18-13 to take the 43-18 win. Berkeley Springs was led by Clatterbuck (seven points), Stotler (four points), Veara (two points), Stabler (two points) and Mellott (one point and seven rebounds).
Harris pulled down a game high 11 rebounds and blocked three shots, while Banks grabbed five rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot.
The Class AA Sectional playoffs were held in Keyser on Monday, February 18.
