Jeffrey L. Spielman
1949-2020
Jeffrey L. Spielman, age 70, of Hancock, Md., passed away on June 22, 2020 at the Georgetown University Hospital, in Washington, D.C., after a short battle with Lymphoma.
Born in Milford, Del., on August 8, 1949, he was the son of the late Donald and Janet Spielman; and the husband of F. Jane Spielman, whom he married on May 26, 1978.
He graduated from South Hagerstown High School, in Hagerstown, Md., in 1967 and went on to study Health and Physical Education, with a minor in History, at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where he also ran track and field.
Jeff enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1972 and received an Honorable Discharge in 1981. He landed his first job as an Elementary Physical Education teacher at the Hancock Elementary school, kicking off a 41-year career in education.
Jeff’s passion of coaching and officiating youth sports continued through his entire life. He had a successful career coaching basketball and track and field at Hancock High School. He then continued to coach, with his son Bradley, at numerous other schools and programs.
After retiring from teaching in 2012, Jeff enjoyed spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, Jeff is survived by a daughter, Deborah Dyson and her husband, Robert; their three children Mallory, Cole and Owen; a son, Bradley Spielman and his wife, Katie; and their two children, Emma and Cameron.
In addition to his parents, Donald and Janet Spielman, Jeff was preceded in death by his brother, Gary Spielman.
His burial will be private, at the convenience of his family.
A Celebration of Life will be scheduled for a later date.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Grove Funeral Home, in Hancock.
