Jean Elizabeth Kiel, 67, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, May 9, 2019 at the Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility in Kearneysville.

Born January 26, 1952 in Republican City, Neb., she was the daughter of the late Erwin A. and Mildred E. Schachterle Kiel.

She was a Christian.

She earned her master’s degree and was an environmental consultant.

She was a member of the Master Gardeners in Berkeley Springs.

She liked cooking, gardening and writing articles for The Morgan Messenger.

She is survived by her son, Derek Thatcher, Berkeley Springs; one stepdaughter, Chris Thatcher, Shepherstown; three step-grandchildren, Weilun Thatcher, Isamae Thatcher and Darcy Thatcher all of Shepherdstown; two brothers, Ronald Kiel, Niwot, Colo. and Arlen Kiel, Omaha, Neb. and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jeffrey Douglas Thatcher on August 1, 2018 and one son, Justin Thatcher.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 25 at 11 am at Trinity-Asbury Methodist Church, 106 Wilkes Street. Memorials can be sent to the “Give Purrs a Chance”  Cat Adoption Center, 51 Independence Street, Berkeley Springs, WV 25411.

Arrangements are being handled by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs.
