James C. Close, Sr.

1935-2018

James Calvin “Indian” Close, Sr., 82, of Berkeley Springs, died Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at his home while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born November 30, 1935 in Berkeley Springs, he was the son of the late William Henry and Margaret Belle Karns Close.

He was a Christian.

He attended public schools in Morgan County and had worked for many years as a lineman installer with Western Union.

He also had owned and operated the Alpine Café in Romney.

He was a member and past Governor of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1371 in Romney and a member of the NRA.

He liked hunting and camping.

Surviving are his children, James Close, Jr., Berkeley Springs, Sharon Ayers, Romney and Sandra Williams, Pasadena, Md.; 21 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Ann Gregory Close; two children, Susie Lutman and Henry Close, Sr.; six sisters, Gladys Whittington, Thelma Payne, Edna Alderton, Agnes Smith, Helen Eppinger and Mary Close and two brothers, John Close and Albert Close.

The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, June 8 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs and from 5-8 on Saturday, June 9 at Shaffer Funeral Home, 230 E. Main Street, Romney. Services and interment will be private.
