Indians grind out win over scrappy Pirates, 75-51

Paw Paw High School was the place to be as the Berkeley Springs High School Indians went to Paw Paw to play the Pirates last Tuesday, February 18. Before a packed gymnasium Paw Paw recognized their senior athletes before the tip-off.

Paw Paw jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead behind a pair of three point baskets by senior Logan King forcing Berkeley Springs to take timeout to regroup. After the timeout, the Indians started to find their rhythm eventually outscoring Paw Paw 19-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Gavin Barkley (eight points), Ty’mir Ross (six points) and Trent Kyne (five points) led the Tribe in the first quarter. Not to be outdone, King had nine first quarter points for Paw Paw all off of three point shots. Dylan Moreland and Coby Ridgeway scored two points each in the quarter as well.

In the second quarter Berkeley Springs started to seize control of the game outscoring Paw Paw 20-8 to  take a 39-21 halftime lead.

Barkley (six points), Ross (two points), Kyne (two  points), Carson Stotler (four  points), Jordan Miller (three points) and Shawn Lord (three points) paced the Indians in the quarter. Paw Paw was led by Ridgeway (four points), Dalton Kasekamp (two points) and Johnny Rodriquez (two points).
In the third quarter Berkeley Springs went on a 22-16 run to maintain a 61-37 lead. In the final quarter both teams scored 14 points each, but the win went to Berkeley Springs by the final score of 75-51.
Berkeley Springs was led by Barkley (22 points),  Kyne (17 points), Ross (10 points), Trevor Osborn (five points),  Stotler (four points), Jared Thompson (four points), Jacob Crespo (three points),  Miller (three points),  Lord (three points), Mickey Gurson (two points) and Cole Oursler (two  points).

Paw Paw was led by their seniors, King had an outstanding night with 21 points (7-3 pointers), Ridgeway (nine points), Moreland (eight points) and  Rodriquez (eight points). Gavin Gunther (three points) and  Kasekamp (two points) also helped the Pirates.

Berkeley Springs traveled to Elkins for a Friday night contest on February 21. Elkins jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the first quarter. By the end of the second quarter Elkins held a 29-23 halftime lead. In the third quarter Elkins used a 17-6 run to take a commanding 46-29 lead. In the final quarter Elkins outscored the Indians 12-7 to take the 58-36 win over the Tribe.

Berkeley Springs was led by Barkley (16 points),  Lord (eight points), Stotler (seven  points),  Gurson (three points) and  Ross (two points).

The Indians are now 13-7 for the season and will wrap up their final regular season game tonight, Wednesday, February 26. The Tribe will host Moorefield for senior night recognition. The JV game will tip-off at 6 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 7:30 p.m.
