Henry J.  Childers, Sr.

1935-2018

Henry Joseph Childers, Sr., 83, of Berkeley Springs, died Friday, May 18, 2018 at his daughter’s home while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born April 14, 1935 in Hancock, he was the son of the late James Garfield and Jennie Ester Eshlman Childers.

He was of the Catholic faith.

He attended public schools in Hancock and retired in 1995 as a sand loader with U.S. Silica.

He liked hunting and fishing.

He was an umpire for 38 years with various sports organizations in the Tri-State area.

Surviving are his children, Henry Childers, Jr. and Misty Soustek, both of Berkeley Springs, Vicki Gonzales, Charles Town, W.Va., Mark Childers, Hedgesville, W.Va., Michael Childers, Hancock and Frank Childers, West Palm Beach, Fla.; one brother, Raymond Childers, Berkeley Springs; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Iris Jean Duncan Childers on December 5, 2009; nine sisters, Waneda Childers, Margaret Smith, Minnie Cowgill, Helen Burton, Gertrude Merea, Hulda Brown, Genevieve Childers, Hazel Childers and Mary Childers and four brothers, Gilbert Childers, Frankie Childers, Harry Childers and Ernest Childers.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 21 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs. Pastor Kenny Mason officiated.

Interment was in Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Morgan County Little League, P.O. Box 812, Berkeley Springs, WV 25411.
