Hancock’s War Memorial Library will be temporarily closed as the transition from the old library to Washington County Free Library, Hancock Veteran’s Memorial Branch takes place.
The current Hancock War Memorial Library.
The branch will close on Wednesday, October 24. Overdue fines for books due between October 24 and October 29 will be waived.
According to Washington County Free Library Executive Director Mary Baykan, the collection of books and computers will be moved from the old library across the road to the new library.
Baykan said miscellaneous supplies, shelving, fixtures, and furniture for the new library would be new for the new library.
“The moving of the library collection should start this Thursday,” Baykan said.
Washington County Free Library first announced it would build a new library in 2012 to replace the current library, which has been flooded twice in its existence.
Last September, a groundbreaking ceremony was held with officials and dignitaries from the town, county, state, and library in attendance.
A ceremonial ribbon cutting will take place on Tuesday, October 30, to put the finishing touches on the library project.
The new library is set to be an 8,000 square foot building with an estimated cost between $2.6 million and $2.7 million. Todd Grove, an architect from Murphy and Dittenhafer, designed the library.
Eagle Construction Company out of Greencastle, Pennsylvania, was the contractor for the project.
