Last week high and middle schools got some good news as Governor Jim Justice and the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission provided an update for winter sports.
The announcement stated that schools could start winter sports practices on February 15 for high and middle schools boy’s and girl’s basketball, cheer, swim and wrestling. The first athletic contests would be March 3 for girls’ basketball, swim, and wrestling. March 5 would be the first contests for boy’s basketball.
High school girl’s basketball sectionals, swim and wrestling regionals would be held April 10. Boy’s basketball sectionals would start on April 17.
Middle school girls basketball and wrestling would end on April 10. Middle school boy’s basketball would end on April 17.
The state wrestling tournament would be April 21 and 22 for Class A/AA and 23 and 24 for Class AAA. The girl’s regional basketball tournament would be April 20-22 and the girl’s state basketball tournament would be April 27-May 1. The boy’s regionals would be April 27-29 with the state tournament being May 4-8.
High school spring sports practices would start on March 15 and middle school would start on March 22. The first high school spring sports contests would be allowed to start on April 12.
High schools will still follow the WV DHHR color code map which means if a county goes red then athletic competition is halted.
