1931-2018

George Henry Fischer, Sr., 87, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, October 29, 2018 at his home while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born October 7, 1931 in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late Louis Walter Fischer and the late Julia Ann Ambrose Fischer Chaney.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a graduate of the West Washington Street High School, Hagerstown.

He worked as a quality control inspector with Fairchild-Hiller Aircraft for 35 years, retiring in 1989.

He then worked for five years with Rohrer Aircraft, retiring in 1994. He served for six years during the Korean War in the U.S. Army with the 72nd Tank Battalion and was a lifetime member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post #60 in Berkeley Springs.

He liked hunting, fishing, camping and trips to the beach.

Surviving are his sons, George Fischer, Jr. and Glenwood Fischer, both of Clear Spring, Md.; three sisters, Naomi Pfeltz, Hartfield, Va., Esther Meyers and Isabelle Miller, both of Williamsport, Md.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his companion of the last 10 years, May Garris, Edenton, N.C. and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Laura Fay Compton Fischer on January 13, 1998; two step children, Cathy Waugh and John Barker; three sisters, Helen Fischer, Mary Huff and Ruth Waters and four brothers, William, Robert, Charles and Clarence Fischer.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 3 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs with Pastor Kenny Mason officiating.

Interment with military honors by the Tri-State Honor Guard will be in Friendship Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
