Frankfort & Grafton take wins over Indians

This past Friday and Saturday, January 3 and 4, the Berkeley Springs Indians hosted a pair of sectional opponents at Berkeley Springs High School. Despite playing in the cozy confines of their home gym the Indians dropped both games to Frankfort and Grafton to fall to 4-5 on the season.

On Friday, January 3 the Frankfort Falcons paid a visit to the Indians and used several key runs throughout the game to post the 66-37 win over the Tribe.

Frankfort jumped out to a 20-10 first quarter lead.

Berkeley Springs bounced back with a run in the second quarter to go into the locker room trailing 37-28 at the half. The third quarter the Falcons took command of the game with an 18-4 run to hold a 55-32 lead at the end of three. The fourth quarter Frankfort outscored the Indians 11-4 to secure the 66-37 win. Berkeley Springs was led by Gavin Barkley (12 points) and Shawn Lord (11 points). Trent Kyne (six points), Ty’mir Ross (four points), Mickey Gurson (two points) and Carson Stotler (two points) also led the Indians.

Berkeley Springs was led by Tyler Barney and Cole Oursler who finished with seven points each. Oscar Robles (five points), Mitchell Miller (five points), and Shawn Ott (two points) also led the Tribe.

On Saturday, January 4, the Indians hosted the Grafton Bearcats in both junior varsity and varsity action.

In the junior varsity game Grafton took the 55-36 win over the JV Indians. Barney (10 points) led the Indians in scoring. Trevor Osborn (seven points), Preston McCoy (seven points), Ott (six points), Miller (three points) and Oursler (three points) also led the Tribe.

The varsity contest between the Indians and the Bearcats proved to be a barn burner that was not decided until the final minute of the game. Grafton was able to secure the 65-61 win over the Tribe.

The first quarter saw Grafton jump out to an 18-14 lead. The second quarter saw the Indians use an 18-6 run to take a 30-24 halftime lead. Grafton battled back to take a 48-46 lead at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw the Bearcats outscore the Indians 17-15 to secure the 65-61 win.

Berkeley Springs was led by Barkley (18 points), Lord (15 points) and Gurson (11 points). Kyne (nine points), Ross (six points) and Tre Roof (two points) also helped lead the Tribe in scoring.

Up next for the Indians is a home contest on Thursday, January 9, with Petersburg. The junior varsity game will start at 6 p.m. while the varsity will follow at 7:30 p.m.
