Drugs, weapons and cash seized in Tuesday search

Several members of the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department and the Berkeley Springs police department recovered suspected crystal meth and marijuana, along with weapons and cash during the search of a residence in southern Morgan County on Tuesday, May 1.

Sheriff K.C. Bohrer said in a media release that officers executed a search warrant at a suspected drug house at the intersection of Eppinger and Fairbee Road around 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Officers arrested John W. Barber, 45, of Berkeley Springs and charged him with felony possession with the intent to deliver a controlled substance.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Morgan County Magistrate Court, the search of the residence was based on information police had received that Barber was supplying meth to an individual who also suspected of selling drugs from that location.

Seven officers searched the residence and recovered two small baggies of suspected crystal meth and eight vacuum-sealed baggies of a green leafy substance suspected to be marijuana.

Capt. Tim Stapleton of the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department is the investigating officer in the case. The search was conducted by Capt. Stapleton, Sheriff Bohrer, Chief Deputy John Walter, Sgt. Wade Shambaugh, Deputy Dennis Jenkins and Deputy Tony Link of the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department and Berkeley Springs police chief T.J. Johnson.

According to Sheriff Bohrer, the search of the residence was the culmination of several weeks of investigation.

In addition to the drugs, officers seized 11 firearms from the home and several hundreds of dollars in cash.

Two other subjects were arrested by summons for possession of a controlled substance. John Wolfrey, 38, of Berkeley Springs was charged with misdemeanor possession of heroin and James R. Hovermale, 47, of Berkeley Springs was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana as a result of the search.

Capt. Stapleton said the investigation is ongoing.

Barber is free on a $7,500 personal recognizance bond.
