Douglas E. Smith, Sr.
1938-2019
Douglas E. “Gene” Smith, Sr., 81, of Great Cacapon and Kingwood, died Thursday, July 4, 2019 in Kingwood.
He was born June 18, 1938 in Berkeley Springs, son of the late Turner Nelson and Agnes Louise Close Smith.
He was a retired printer for the Baltimore Sun newspaper.
He liked being outdoors, camping, fishing, hunting and gardening.
In 1961 and 1965 he was an Olympic Gold Medalist in the Deaf Olympics as a member of the USA Basketball team.
He is survived by his wife, Cathryn Ann Waltermyer Smith; two sons, Douglas “Doug” Smith, Jr., Berkeley Springs and Frank Smith, Sr., Terra Alta; two daughters, Wendy Smith, Great Cacapon and Amy Moats, Kingwood; companion, Benita Hillery; three sisters, Juanita “Nita” Kelley and Mari Stotler, both of Berkeley Springs and Barbara Spade, New Castle, Del.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, Harold, Tim and John Smith and two sisters, Nancy Keefer and Rosemary Horton.
A memorial service will be at the Calvary United Methodist Church, Central Avenue, Great Cacapon on Saturday, August 17, 12 to 4 p.m.
