1931-2019

Donald Edward Smith, age 87, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Friday, February 1, 2019 at Winchester Medical Center.

Born July 15, 1931 in Oldtown, Md., he was the son of the late Russell O. and Nola V. Turner Smith.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs.

Don was a graduate of Allegany County, Md., public schools.

He served with the U.S. Air Force 5th Squadron during the Korean War from 1952-1956 and then served with the Air National Guard for nine years.

He worked for many years as an airplane technician with Fairchild Aircraft, Glen L. Martin and Henson Aviation, all of Hagerstown.

Don was a member of DeFord Lodge #88, A.F. & A.M., Berkeley Chapter #77 Order of the Eastern Star and the NRA.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He traveled extensively out West and loved Montana.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rosemary S. Dolly Smith, one niece, Kitty L. Shrader of Tennessee and four nephews, Russell S. Crowe and Donald E. Crowe, both of Tennessee, Wade K. Morral and his wife Cindy and Mark E. Morral and his wife Lori, all of Cumberland, Md., and numerous great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Eleanor Lee Crowe and her husband Donald E. Crowe.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with Pastor Gary Kerns officiating.

Interment with military honors provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard will be in Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery, Flintstone, Md.
