One of Morgan County’s K-9 officers was retired last Thursday, February 6 after seven years working with Sheriff’s Deputy Dennis Jenkins. K-9 Troy was given a service commendation and will spend his retirement years with Deputy Jenkins, who has been the dog’s exclusive partner during his service to the county.

Sheriff K.C. Bohrer recognized Troy’s specialized work with the county’s department, and also thanked longtime K-9 supporters Jackie Gandy and Mona Hurst for their ongoing advocacy for the added police program.
Deputy Jenkins said one of the highlights of his work with Troy was a case in which the two were able to locate a four-year-old autistic boy who had gone missing in the Spruce Pine Hollow area, and return the child unharmed to his family quickly.
“The best part of working with Troy was being able to take him into the schools so the kids could interact with him. He loved the attention he received and was great around the kids,” Jenkins said.
Deputy Jenkins will continue to serve as the department’s highway safety officer. Jenkins has received statewide recognition for his work curbing DUI driving through Morgan County. Deputy Jenkins also coordinates the Sheriff’s Department’s Deputy Reserve volunteer program.
