Carl C. Spencer

1931-2021

Born May 23, 1931, in Paw Paw, W.Va. and departed this earth on January 12, 2021 from WVU Berkeley Medical Center due to COVID-19 complications.

He was the only child of the late Della Spencer, of Paw Paw, W.Va.

Carl, also known as “Ras” to his family, had an amazing and full life.

During his lifetime, he was in the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army and served as one of the first African-American paratroopers. When he returned from the armed services, he then went on to serve as a male nurse at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va. for over 30 years. Once retired from the VA Center, he became a counselor at East Ridge Health Services in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Carl was preceded in death by his mother, Della Spencer of Paw Paw, W.Va.

He is survived by one daughter, Carla Marie Spencer, Morgantown, W.Va.; two very close first cousins, Ralph Largent, Sr. and Yvonne “Sue” Powell, both of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and he leaves behind several loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Carl was a lifetime member and a Deacon of the Supreme Council of the House of Jacob.

ue to COVID-19, a private graveside service was held Saturday, January 16 and Carl was laid to rest at Camp Hill Cemetery in Paw Paw, W.Va. with Presiding Elder Charles Bowles, Jr. and Advanced Presiding Elder Mark Faith officiating. A military graveside service was conducted by members of the Berkeley Springs Honor Guard.

The family appreciates all the thoughts, prayers and love that have been expressed during this difficult time.
