BSHS Athletic Hall of Fame releases Class of 2018

The Berkeley Springs High School Athletic Hall of Fame committee has released the Class of 2018 members. The Class of 2018 is as follows:

Lewis Close was a standout football, basketball, baseball and track athlete at BSHS from 1951-1956. Close went on and played basketball at Shepherd.

Karen Clark was the first ever BSHS female state cross country champion. Clark was a three time cross country All State runner, All Region team two years, Regional champion, All PVC two years, All Apple Valley League Conference three times, first Berkeley Springs High School Cross Country State Champion (boy or girl). She was member of three consecutive undefeated team seasons in dual, triangular and quad meets. In track, she was a five time All State runner, broke school record for girls’ 1600 meters, a member of the girl’s state runner up 4×800 meter relay team that also broke the school record and had multiple All Conference awards P.V.C.

Steve Buser was a standout athlete for Berkeley Springs High School from 1978-81. Buser starred in golf and basketball. On the basketball court, Buser was a member of the first Indians basketball team to advance to the state tournament. Buser was eventually inducted into Hagerstown Community College Athletic Hall of Fame for his basketball talents.

Josh Wise was a BSHS soccer standout who scored 110 career goals and had 90 assists, was a member of 2008 State Champion team, had 40 goals in 2008 season, most goals in a state tournament (six in two games).

Donna Miller was a standout at softball and basketball from 1972-1976. Miller played volleyball, basketball and softball at Shepherd. Miller was the first BSHS softball player who signed to play semi-pro softball with the Washington Diggers.

Mike Webster was a former standout BSHS athlete and has been a long time coach for BSHS athletics.

Varnell Burkhart was a 1960’s basketball coach for the Tribe and has been a long time BSHS athletic contributor and supporter.

Angelo Luvara is the all-time winningest coach in BSHS football history. Luvara also was the first head football coach at BSHS to take the team to state playoffs.

2008 Boys Soccer Team -the first varsity boys’ soccer team in BSHS history to capture the Class AA State Soccer Championship. The 2008 State Champions were coached by Jamie Chenoweth (head coach) and Carl Wise (assistant coach). Members included Zach Ziler (team manager), Cody Riffle, Devin Walsh, Josh Wise, Matt Martin, Aaron Carr, Tyler Lineberg, Caleb Murray, Dylan Walsh, Zane Mokhiber, Josh Fox, Jacob Wise, Gudiel Guzman, Gavin Adams, Tyler Miller, Rex Truax, Andrew Rightnour, Matt Stevens, Dylan Trip, Ben Brooks and Jonas Denzinger (an exchange student from Germany).
