The 2019 spring tennis season is winding down for the members of the Berkeley Springs High School Boy’s and Girl’s Tennis Teams.
The past two weeks saw the Indians compete against Clear Spring, Md., East Fairmont and Hedgesville in competitive matches. When the teams compete against Clear Spring they have to follow the Maryland rules which states no player can play both singles and doubles.
On the boys side the Indians took a 3-2 win over Clear Spring on Wednesday, April 17.
Number one singles player Haden Fincham and number two singles player Matthew Rubeck each picked up wins. Then the number one doubles team of Dylan Carder and Ben Michael picked up a win to seal the victory for the Tribe. On the girls side only number one singles player Leah Reed picked up a win against Clear Spring.
The Indians traveled to Keyser to play East Fairmont who is one of the main regional competitors on Saturday, April 20.
On the boys side the Tribe pulled off a 5-2 win over the previously unbeaten East Fairmont team. Posting wins for the boys were Fincham (#1 singles), Rubeck (#2 singles) and Michael (#4 singles). The number one doubles team of Fincham and Rubeck and number two doubles team of Carder and Michael also picked up wins.
On the girls side the Lady Indians got wins from Reed (#2 singles) and Natalie Hashem (#3 singles).
Heading into last week’s match with Frankfort the Lady Indians lost number one seed Carder to an ankle injury. The loss of Carder took a toll on Berkeley Springs as they lost 4-3 to Frankfort. Picking up wins were Reed (#2 singles) and Hashem (#3 singles). The number two doubles team of Reed and Kennedy Shives posted the other win for the Tribe.
The tennis teams traveled to Hedgesville last Wednesday, April 24. The Lady Indians despite still missing Carder picked up a 4-3 win. Picking up wins were Reed (#2 singles), Hashem (#3 singles) and Shives (#4 singles). The number one doubles team of Reed and Hashem picked up the clinching win.
On the boys side the Indians lost 4-3. Fincham (#1 singles) and Rubeck (#2 singles) picked up wins. Fincham and Rubeck came from behind to score the number one doubles win.
The teams traveled to Musselman for the last regular season game on Monday, April 29. Then on May 2-4 the Indians will compete in the Class AA Region I Championships.
Seeds for regionals were just released and on the boys side the Indians earned number one seeds at #1, #2, #3 singles and at #1 and #2 doubles. On the girls side the Lady Indians earned seeded positions at three of the singles positions and one of the doubles positions.
