Abner Hugh Klaproth, age 79, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Friday, December 27, 2019 at home in Berkeley Springs.

Born November 29, 1940 in Jersey Shore, Pa., he was the son of the late Mae Lucille Hill Klaproth.

Abner graduated in 1958 from Tygart Valley High School in Mill Creek, West Virginia.

In 1962 he graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. While attending college, Abner was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma.

After graduation he worked for the federal government for HUD as a market analyst. He moved from Washington, D.C. to Summersville, W.Va. to pursue a career in coal mining.

He owned as well as worked for multiple coal mining companies. He retired from the coal industry in 2003.

Abner was a member of the Clarksburg Lodge #155 A.F. & A.M. in Clarksburg, W.Va., WVU Alumni Association, and Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post #60.

He was a huge Mountaineer fan, avid hunter and fisherman, an avid Pinnacle player, and enjoyed playing slot machines at local casinos. He was known for his firework displays at his annual 4th of July parties in Summersville.

Abner is survived by his wife of 56 years Carol Ann Stotler Klaproth at home; two daughters, Lori Ann Martin and husband Adam of Charlotte, N.C., Debra Sue Gates and husband Curtis of Berkeley Springs; four grandchildren, Megan Elizabeth Martin of Durham, N.C., Sarah Nicole Martin of Charlotte, N.C., Casey Allen Gates and Caden Andrew Gates, both of Berkeley Springs.

Services and interment will be private.
