A water leak and ceiling repairs have temporarily closed a Berkeley Springs bookstore, which hopes to reopen in time for their 10th anniversary in April. Berkeley Springs Books will mark 10 years as a downtown business this April, and the owners hope to be celebrating the milestone with their shop doors open.

The store, in a historic building on Washington Street, has been closed since a New Year’s Day water leak caused damage to books, fixtures and merchandise.

Bert Lustig said the leak and repairs have hurt their business, and contractors have raised the issue of lack of local building inspections as a source of concern.

Fixing the damage has meant the store will remain closed for now for repairs, including removal of a pressed tin ceiling that’s a popular historical feature of the shop, said owner Lustig. Lustig and Pat Graybeal have built a wide collection of new, used and rare books, including sections by local authors and on local history and attractions. Both said they expect to have the store repaired and restocked in time for their 10th anniversary.
