Betty R. Wilkins


Betty Ruth (Zimmerman) Wilkins, 91, of Mercersburg, Pa., died Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at her home surrounded by family while under the care of Heartland Hospice. Born on April 16, 1926 at Sylvan Farm in Little Cove, Mercersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Roy and Mary Zimmerman.

She graduated from Mercersburg, Pa., High School. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Little Cove, Pa. She worked as a dental assistant at an army base in Pittsburgh, Pa., worked at Nu-Way Cleaners in Mercersburg, Pa., did outreach for Franklin/Fulton County Family Planning, drove a school bus for the Tuscarora School District, Mercersburg, Pa., and for many years sold her baked goods at farmers’ markets in Arlington, Va., and Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

She is survived by her children Judy Mellott, Mercersburg, Pa., Shari Ommert, Fort Loudon, Pa., and Richard Wilkins, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; two sisters, Joan Allen, Las Vegas, Nev., Mildred Lauther, York, Pa.; five grandchildren, Cameron Mellott, Mercersburg, Pa., Krystal Long, Martinsburg, W.Va., Erik Wilkins, Arvada, Col., Katie Hege, Chambersburg, Pa., Grant Ommert, Fort Loudon, Pa., and four great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter Jeanne Patterson.

She loved Sylvan farm where she lived and died. The farm has been in the family for over 200 years. She expressed her love for her family through her cooking.
