Woman charged for concealing body in suspected overdose

Crystal Greene Crystal Greene Crystal Greene, 34, of Berkeley Springs was arrested on Sunday, January 14 and jailed on charges of concealing a dead body.

Greene is accused of not reporting to authorities that a Maryland man had died at her Westridge Drive apartment sometime between 6:30 and 9:30 a.m. of a suspected drug overdose.

Sgt. Wade Shambaugh of the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department responded to the apartment around 3:50 p.m. Sunday after being alerted by 911. Bath Patrolman Tony Link, who is also a special deputy with the Sheriff’s Department, had also received tips that Greene was seeking help to remove Mitchell’s body from her apartment.

According to a complaint filed in Morgan County Magistrate Court, Sgt. Shambaugh arrived on the scene and found Joshua Edward Mitchell, 33, of Maryland lying on the floor of the apartment, just outside the bathroom. Mitchell appeared to the officer to have been dead for several hours, the complaint said.

While on the scene, Sgt. Shambaugh received information from the West Virginia State Police that Greene had contacted her former husband about Mitchell, and asked for help to remove his body.

Greene told officers that Mitchell had come to her apartment between 6 and 6:30 a.m. and she found him on the floor at 9:30 a.m. Greene allegedly told officers that she thought he was “probably dead, but wasn’t sure.” Greene said she left the apartment and returned around 1 p.m. According to the criminal complaint, Greene admitted to officers that she contacted several people about what she should do with Mitchell’s body. She denied asking anyone to help her remove it.

At no point did Greene report Mitchell’s death to law enforcement or emergency service personnel.

Sgt. Shambaugh charged Greene with attempting to conceal a deceased body, a felony. Greene was also arrested for probation violation.

Greene was serving out the end of a five-year probation for committing burglary in 2013 with her then-husband, Richard “Kenny” Greene.

Crystal Greene is being held at the Eastern Regional Jail on a $10,000 cash-only bail.
