Paw Paw Pirates Basketball round up

The Paw Paw High School Pirates Varsity Boys’ Basketball Team is off to a 2-2 start under new head coach Chris Poniris.

The Pirates were able to beat Union 73-54 at home, but dropped a road contests to East Hardy 91-77, Northern Garrett 71-54 and Harman 61-51.

The Pirates opened their season on December 6 with a road trip to the East Hardy Cougars. Paw Paw had to play the numbers game as several players got into foul trouble and by the end of the game Paw Paw was playing only three players against East Hardy’s five. However, despite the disadvantage the Pirates Landon Ridgeway turned in an outstanding performance and single handedly kept the Paw Paw team in the game with 31 points.

The Pirates hosted Union on December 8 in a home opener. Before the game Paw Paw High School recognized the Bank of Romney for their donation of the purchase of new scoreboards in the Pirate gym. Paw Paw got their first win as they rolled by Union 73-54.

The Pirates were led by Landon Ridgeway who had 19 points. Christian Braithewaite added 16 points, while Coby Ridgeway (14) and Jon Wolfe (10) helped lead the scoring.

The Pirates traveled to Northern Garrett for a contest with the Huskies on December

11. Northern used their depth to drop the Pirates to 1- 2 on the season with a 71-54 setback. Ridgeway once again led the Pirates with 24 points in the loss.

The Pirates hosted the Harman Panthers on Saturday, December 16. Paw Paw scored 30 points by the half and used a 21 point outburst in the third quarter and 10 more in the fourth to put 61 points in the game. The Pirates picked up their second win at the final horn by the score of 61-51.

The Pirates were led by Dylan Moreland (19), Braithewaite (15), Coby Ridgeway (15), and Landon Ridgeway (8).

Paw Paw will be hosting an Alumni Basketball Game this coming Saturday, December 23 at 5 p.m. The public is encouraged to support the boys’ varsity basketball team.
