Berkeley Springs High School senior Stephanie Golden has been a part of several state championship programs while running cross country and track for the Lady Indians.

Since Golden burst onto the running scene her career has been capped with All State honors and countless medals. However, the “Golden Girl” is not only a phenomenal athlete, but she has the book smarts to back up her newest honor. Recently Golden was named the female recipient of Wendy’s High School Heisman for the state of West Virginia.

Golden who currently holds a 4.4 grade point average is ranked second in her senior class and is planning to major in Biology and become a pediatrician impressed the Wendy’s Heisman committee to earn the award.

To be determined as a winner of the $1,000 award, the committee reviews the nominee’s athletic accomplishments and then reviews their academic achievements along with their community service.

Nominees have to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and be leaders and role models in their respective schools and communities. Nominees must have participated in one of the 47 school sponsored sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee in the Summer and Winter Olympic Games or the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Golden who has been a proven leader in cross country and track for the Lady Indians for the last four years also serves as the senior class president along with being a member of the BSHS Student Council and National Honor Society.

As for community service Golden is involved with a group named the Community Cougars who go to Warm Springs Intermediate School and eat lunch with students who may lack attention at home or that are struggling academically in school.

Long-time high school guidance counselor, Candice Pennington, alerted Golden about the Wendy’s Heisman giving her an opportunity to showcase her student athlete accolades over the last four years.

“I’m really proud because over the last four years I have had a lot of ups and downs. However I am happy that I was able to have these experiences at Berkeley

Springs High School. I wouldn’t have these last four years any other way,” stated Golden.
