November theme for Wonderful People is Be Positive

by Elaine Parke

This is Wonderful People's month to "Be Positive & Smile." Whenever you can this month, wear sunny yellow and above all, share a smile.

Intrinsic to the model for Wonderful People is the African proverb, "It takes a whole village to raise one child."

Says Neal Lester, an African Humanities professor at Arizona State, "The Africanist perspective is more about community and collaboration and less about individual egos, and personal contributions." He goes on to say, "As a child, growing up in Africa, my conduct was a concern of everybody, not just my parents."

Berkeley Springs is now demonstrating that we are a community, becoming successful at working together to collectively support and raise our children and youth.

Our 2017 middle school surveys confirm that the presence of the 12 Habits messages in Ambassador locations throughout our community, is now in first place, among the 14 method elements of Wonderful People to support students.

On behalf of our youth and families, we recognize all of the Ambassadors who support 12 Habits for Wonderful People. The consistent and loyal displays of the colorcoded 12 Monthly Habits posters and materials, for more than two years, provide both students and families with reliable repetitive messages about civility, resilience and healthy life skills.

Throughout the community, adults and children often approach me, smiling, and comment that they see the colorful Habits, "everywhere."
