Book by area author shares stories of country life, friendship

Regional author Stephen Lynn Meyers has shared years worth of stories from a former farmer and pastor in his book, Growin’ Up Country: The Life and Times of Clarence Henry Showalter.

Showalter, who passed away at the age of 95, told a lifetime worth of tales to Meyers during their frequent visits together.

At some point, Meyers started writing down the stories about farm life and history, as told by Showalter.

“Throughout all the years, no two visits were exactly the same, although certain aspects of them remained completely unvaried and constant,” Meyers wrote. “A blessed, good fortune was bestowed upon me the day I met Clarence Henry Showalter.”

Meyers, of Hagerstown, has several generations of family in the Hancock and Berkeley Springs area. Growin’ Up Country is his second book. He’s also the author of Walking in Water: A history of, and tales from The Conococheague Creek.

Growin’ Up Country is available for purchase at Wilson General Store in Clear Spring.
