Cacapon State Park to host Five State Challenge 5K

by Jamie Harris

The brainchild of Brian Heironimus and the efforts by Berkeley Springs Hall of Fame Cross Country coach John Rowland and Glen Stotler have paid off in a big way. On Saturday, November 18 the first annual Five State Challenge 5K will take place at the Cacapon State Park cross country course.

The event will be an open race for boys and girls in grades 9-12. Heironimus, Rowland and Stotler are all hoping that it will attract high school runners from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and DC area. The event will look to host 100 boys and 100 girls on the challenging course. There will be individual champions crowned and one state will be crowned as the overall champion for the Five State Challenge 5K.

The event came into consideration after the long time Battle of the Potomac that is run in the DC area was canceled. From there Heironimus took it upon himself to organize the event and picked up sponsorships from Valley Health and the Cacapon State Park Foundation.

“This will be a transition race to build toward bigger races. It comes at a perfect time as the most of the high school state cross country championships will have ended and the Foot Locker National Championships will be two weeks afterwards,” stated Rowland.

“I have to commend Brian and the Berkeley Springs Cross Country parents for taking this on. Also a big thanks to Valley Health for sponsoring runner bags for the participants. Runners will also get tee shirts and a meal out at the park for their efforts,” stated Coach Rowland.

Heironimus stated that Valley Health donated $1,200 for the event and have already agreed to be a sponsor for the next four years. Looking down the road the event could generate anywhere from $8,000- $10,000 which will be divided up and given to the Berkeley Springs High School Cross Country and Track programs, the Cacapon State Park Foundation and the Maintenance Account which helps maintain the course throughout the year.
