John Douglas

Dear Editor:

John gave me my first-ever writing job. Three hundred words about a benefit concert for the Morgan County Humane Society when I was a high school intern at The Messenger. A phone-shy introvert and obsessive-compulsive rewriter, I’m sure I made one pain-in-the-neck wannabe reporter.

John was funny, sharp, savant-like at Scrabble, and in no way squeamish about asking hard questions of authority. He also offered me the best piece of advice I’ve ever gotten about creating a writing career: Make sure you’re writng about something you care about, otherwise you might as well be doing something else.
