Fairy E. J. Oyerly

Fairy Emma Jean Van- Gosen Oyerly, 86, of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia died Saturday, October 14, 2017 at her home from complications due to failing kidneys and congestive heart failure.

Called “Jeanne” by her friends and family, she was born July 15, 1931, in Berkeley Springs, daughter of the late Berkeley Carter VanGosen and Martha Ellen Barney VanGosen. She graduated from Berkeley Springs High School and, at the age of nineteen, married Phil Oyerly. They lived in Maryland, Florida, Virginia, and Maryland again before moving back to Berkeley Springs to live out their final years--where they once began--among old friends and family.

She was an excellent homemaker who, once married, never worked outside the home, except to volunteer on election days. She kept a daily journal for decades and diligently worked on the fine art of solving all types of puzzles. She always enjoyed reading a good book.

She loved birds and snowflakes and never stopped appreciating the beautiful view from her backyard. Her peanut butter fudge was legendary.

She loved babies and her seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren brought her endless pleasures.

She was preceded in death by seven siblings and by her loving husband of 60 years, Philip Reed Oyerly. Surviving are daughter, Karen Marie Oyerly and husband, Stevan Hannes of Westminster, Md., two sons, Philip Richard Oyerly and his wife, Nancy of Houston, Del. and Kenneth Kevin Oyerly and wife, Joan of Shepherdstown, W.Va., brothers Larry and Ronald VanGosen and sisters Betty Burton and Nancy Havermale, seven grandchildren, Philip Ryan, Benjamin, Kimberly, Jared, Jordan, Nicholas and Andrew and ten great-grandchildren, Calista and Grayson, Madeline, Jessica and Allison, Samantha and Luke, Dominic, Oliver and Delilah.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 21st, 11 a.m., at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center at 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, WV with Pastor B.J. Worley officiating.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, October 20th, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, October 21st at 10 a.m., one hour before the funeral is scheduled to begin. Burial will take place at Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Jeanne’s memory be made to Calvary Bible Church of Berkeley Springs, WV, where the donations will go toward renovations.
